How aircraft types are classed: a public lexicon

An airplane on a ramp is an individual airframe with a registration. A type is the design underneath it: the manufacturer, the family, the model, and the codes that identify that design in flight plans, manuals, and traffic displays. N840BA is one airplane. B738 is every Boeing 737-800 ever built. This note is about the second kind of identity: what a type is, how it is named, and how the industry sorts thousands of designs into classes a reader can hold in their head.
The designator is the key
ICAO Document 8643, Aircraft Type Designators, is the public list the world's air traffic system runs on. Every type in scheduled or instrument flight gets a short code. B738 is a Boeing 737-800. A20N is an Airbus A320neo. C172 is a Cessna 172. H60 is the H-60 helicopter family. F16 is the F-16. The code is deliberately short and deliberately boring: a dispatcher in Anchorage, a controller in Atlanta, and a catalog like this one can all say B738 without arguing about marketing names.
IATA runs a parallel set of codes for airline scheduling and ticketing. The IATA code for a 737-800 is 738; for an A320neo it is 32N. IATA codes exist so reservation systems can print a compact equipment code on a ticket. They cover mostly airliners. The ICAO designator covers everything, from a Cessna 150 to an An-124, and it is the better key for a type lexicon.
Neither code tells you the variant's cabin, its engines' thrust rating, or who operates it. The code is an address. What lives at that address is the type certificate, the family tree, and the published dimensions.
Class by mission first, then by size
The industry's first split is by mission, not by shape. Airline transport is one world: aircraft built to move fare-paying passengers and freight on published routes. General aviation is another: training, personal, utility, and business flying. Rotorcraft are a third. Combat types are a fourth, and in a public lexicon they appear as identities only.
Inside each world, the classes are mostly about size and propulsion. Airliners split into narrowbody, widebody, regional jet, and turboprop airliner. General aviation splits into piston singles, piston twins, turboprops, and three weight bands of business jet. Helicopters split into light, medium, heavy, and attack. Combat types split into fighters and attack jets. Sixteen classes cover the 265 types in the Aerolex snapshot of 12 August 2026 without forcing any design into a bin it does not fit.
These labels are reading aids, not regulatory categories. A type certificate does not say "narrowbody." It says maximum takeoff weight, seating, and engine type. The class words are how people who work around aircraft compress those facts into one syllable of meaning.
Families, variants, and production lines
A family is a lineage under one type certificate lineage. Variants inside a family differ in fuselage length, engine choice, weights, and range, but they share the core design and usually a common pilot type rating. Reading families is the fastest way to read the sky.
The Boeing 737 is the canonical example. The Original series (-100 and -200) opened the line in 1967. The Classic series (-300, -400, -500) stretched and re-engined it in the 1980s. The Next Generation series (-600 through -900) arrived from 1997 with a new wing. The MAX (7, 8, 9, 10) is the current production line. Four generations, one family name, one ICAO pattern: B732, B733, B738, B38M. Airbus runs the same play with the A320 family: A319, A320, and A321, each in ceo (current engine option) and neo (new engine option) form.
"In production" means the line is open and the maker will still sell you a new one. Out of production does not mean gone. Thousands of out-of-production types fly daily, and many, like the 737-800, remain among the most common aircraft in the world decades after their line closed. Production status is a fact about the factory, not about the ramp.
The makers
Large airliners come from a duopoly: Boeing and Airbus. Regional jets and turboprop airliners come from specialists: Embraer, ATR, and De Havilland Canada. General aviation pistons come from Textron Aviation (Cessna and Beechcraft), Piper, Cirrus, and Diamond. Turboprop utility types add Pilatus and Daher. Business jets come from Gulfstream, Bombardier, Dassault, Embraer, and Textron's Citation line. Helicopters come from Robinson, Bell, Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo, Sikorsky, and Boeing. Combat types come from Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Dassault, Saab, Sukhoi, and MiG.
Each maker's line has a logic. Gulfstream's G-series climbs by cabin size and range. Cessna's singles climb from two seats to four. Robinson's line is three helicopters deep: R22, R44, R66. Once you can read the lines, a designator stops being a code and starts being a sentence.

Why a lexicon
Type literacy is the layer under every other aviation conversation. Delay discussions, fleet news, safety reporting, and procurement all assume the reader knows what a 737-800 is and how it differs from an A320neo. Aerolex exists to make that assumption safe.
