Helicopters, fighters, and attack types: public identity only

Helicopters and combat aircraft belong in a type encyclopedia because they have designators, published dimensions, makers, and names. They do not belong there as a threat picture. This note walks the classes and the production lines, and it holds one firm boundary: public identity only. No weapons, no sensors, no signatures, no classified performance.
Helicopters: four classes
Light. Training, news, EMS, and private flying. Robinson's line (R22, R44, R66) sells more helicopters than anyone; the R44 is the best-selling helicopter of the modern era. Bell's 206 and 407, the Airbus H125 and H135, and the Leonardo AW109 fill out the class. Two blades on the Robinson and Bell light types; four or a shrouded fenestron on the Airbus twins.
Medium. Offshore, search and rescue, corporate, and utility work: the Leonardo AW139, Sikorsky S-76, Bell 412, Airbus H160, and the UH-60 Black Hawk family, which is a public utility type long before it is a military one. Twin engines, four or five blades, ten to fifteen seats.
Heavy. Lift and long range: the Boeing CH-47 Chinook with its tandem rotors, the Sikorsky S-92, the Airbus H225, and the Mil Mi-8 and Mi-17, the most-produced helicopter family in the world.
Attack. The AH-64 Apache and the AH-1Z Viper appear here as public role types: designator, dimensions, maker, and service. Nothing more.
Rotor configurations are the tell
You can class a helicopter from a distance by its rotor layout. A single main rotor with a tail rotor is the default. A fenestron, a fan inside the tail, marks several Airbus types. NOTAR, a fan-driven tail boom with no rotor at all, marks MD helicopters. Tandem rotors, one front and one rear, mean Chinook. Coaxial contra-rotating discs mean Kamov. Blade count tracks size loosely: two blades on light trainers, four or five on medium and heavy types.
The helicopter makers
Robinson builds the volume light line in California. Bell, Airbus Helicopters, and Leonardo cover light through medium. Sikorsky owns the medium-lift utility space with the S-76, S-92, and the H-60 family. Boeing builds the Apache and the Chinook. Russian Helicopters, through the Mil and Kamov bureaus, builds the Mi and Ka lines that dominate lift work across much of the world.

Fighters: roles and generations
Fighter classes read on two axes. The first is role. Air-superiority fighters are built to own the sky: the F-15 Eagle and F-22 Raptor are the American reference types. Multirole fighters trade a little purity for flexibility: the F-16, the F/A-18E Super Hornet, the Dassault Rafale, the Eurofighter Typhoon, and the Saab Gripen. Strike fighters, like the F-15E Strike Eagle, optimize for delivering weapons at range while keeping fighter performance.
The second axis is generation, a shorthand for the technology era. Fourth generation covers the 1970s teen-series designs: F-14, F-15, F-16, F/A-18. Generation four and a half adds modern radar, weapons, and cockpits to those airframes: the F-15EX Eagle II, the F/A-18E Block III, the Rafale, the Typhoon, the Gripen E. Fifth generation means stealth designed in from the start: the F-22 and the F-35, with the J-20 and Su-57 as the public Chinese and Russian answers.
Attack jets are a separate, older class: aircraft built to work close to ground forces. The A-10 Thunderbolt II, built around its gun, and the Sukhoi Su-25 are the public reference types. The AV-8B Harrier II adds vertical landing to the same job.
The combat-aircraft makers
Lockheed Martin builds the F-16 and the F-35. Boeing builds the F-15 and the F/A-18. Northrop Grumman built the B-2 and builds the B-21. Dassault builds the Rafale. The Eurofighter consortium builds the Typhoon. Saab builds the Gripen. Sukhoi and MiG build the Russian lines. In a public encyclopedia, what matters about all of them is identity: designator, family, dimensions, maker, and the services that fly them.

The line that does not move
If a fact is not in ICAO 8643, a type certificate, a manufacturer's public sheet, or an attributable public article, it does not go in this encyclopedia. Operators are named as services, never as unit-level rosters. A type page tells you what the design is. It will never tell you how to find, track, or counter one. That boundary is the product's editorial policy, and it is not negotiable.
