What general aviation means
General aviation is everything with a civil certificate that is not scheduled airline service: training, personal travel, utility work, and business flying. It shares a code system with the airlines and almost nothing else in size. The Cessna 172 is the most-produced aircraft type in history, and it is small enough to park beside a car.
ICAO supplies the keys here too. C172 is the Skyhawk. SR22 is the Cirrus. BE20 is the King Air 200. GLF6 is the Gulfstream G650. One lexicon covers the whole ramp.
Six classes, 118 types
The snapshot holds 118 GA types: 34 piston single, 18 piston twin, 18 turboprop GA, 19 very light and light jet, 13 midsize, 16 large business jet.
Piston singles are the training and personal fleet: one engine, four seats or fewer in most cases, no pressurization. Piston twins add a second engine for redundancy and payload. Turboprop GA is turbine power on a propeller: pressurized, weather-capable, and happy on short strips. The three business-jet classes climb by cabin size and range, from owner-flown light jets to intercontinental large cabins.
The makers and their lines
Textron Aviation owns two historic names, Cessna and Beechcraft, and with them the Skyhawk, the Caravan, the King Air line (90, 200, 350, in continuous production since 1974), and the Citation jet family. Piper's PA-28 line and Cirrus's SR line split much of the piston single market between tradition and composites; every Cirrus carries a whole-airframe parachute. Diamond builds the DA line, Pilatus builds the PC-12 and PC-24, and Daher builds the TBM.
At the top of the ramp, Gulfstream's G-series, Bombardier's Global line, Dassault's Falcons, and Embraer's Phenom and Praetor families divide the business-jet classes by cabin size and range. A G650 and a 737 can share a length; nothing else about them is shared.
What separates the classes
Four dividers do the work. Propulsion: piston, turboprop, or jet. Pressurization: whether the aircraft can live above the weather. Range: pattern work, regional, transcontinental, or intercontinental. Operating model: owner-flown, charter, fractional, or corporate flight department. The class words compress those four facts into one label.
US-common, in this encyclopedia, marks types you are likely to meet in US training, charter, and business flying. It is a reading flag, not a fleet census.

A type entry is published identity and overall size, not a cabin drawing, a payload chart, or an AFM. Where a public encyclopedia article is linked, the summary text belongs to that article's license and is attributed as such.
